Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The color of this young Pinot is of dark, dark cherry, but its aromasare at times brighter; as ripe red cherry, crushed flowers and suggestionsof sweet smoke, pencil shavings and powdered sumac sitabove a richer Panitone/Fruitcake-like undercurrent. Despite itszest and obvious youth it is round and rich on the palate and is aslong as it is generous. Its flavor profile is a work in progress, asdarker impressions of chocolaty cherry shift back and forth withcitric/savory expressions of vivid red cherry, dried orange and cerealgrains. Some mineral elements are present, but never really challengethe wines fruit orientation. Although it offers plenty of currentappeal, it is a wine worth cellaring and those who do so willprobably enjoy a much grander experience

Beautiful blackberry and boysenberry fruit is rich, fleshy and concentrated. Keeps a tight focus on the fruit, offering hints of spice, nutmeg and fresh earth.

Chasseur, California
Chasseur Winery Image
Chasseur Wines is dedicated to small lot, hand-crafted wines in the old French tradition with emphasis on vineyard designates. Our small size (presently about 2,700 cases) allows complete control over the winemaking process, therefore, enabling us to produce the finest wines the fruit has to offer. We are pursuing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay's final and possibly finest frontier, Sonoma's 'West County'. Still in its renaissance this area is composed of the western edge of the Russian River Valley and beyond, known as the 'true' Sonoma Coast. This area is in and around the townships of Sebastopol, Freestone and Occidental.

Our goal is to be among the pioneers to develop the potential of this area. Please explore our web site to learn more about how we make these wines from grape to glass. We offer all these wines, especially the smaller lots which may not make it to the retail shelf or the restaurant wine list through the winery.

While the Russian River Valley is a large appellation with multiple climate zones and soil types, it is best known for cool-climate varieties, with Pinot Noir as the most celebrated. The grapes benefit from a reliable late afternoon flow of Pacific Ocean fog through the Petaluma Gap and along the Russian River Valley that ensures slow and steady ripening and the preservation of grape acidity. Today many of California’s most highly regarded Pinot Noir vineyards are in the Russian River Valley, along with its sub-appellation, Green Valley.

Historically Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs had bright red fruit and delicate earthy, mineral notes. But changes in viticultural and winemaking practices have led to stylistic changes in some of the region’s wines. Adjustments to canopy management, among other techniques, have resulted in riper fruit and bolder wines as well. These show flavors of black cherry, blackberry, cola, spice and darker, loamy earth tones, accenting traditional Pinot Noir notes of strawberry, raspberry and light cherry.
