The Chanson holding covers 4ha of which half is red. The pinot is lower on the slopes where there is more clay, planted in 1965 and 1966. All whole bunch. 14% alcohol. The bunches show here though for me in a nice way. Deep purple with a certain stemmy austerity, plumper fruit in the middle, cherry stones and darker fruit, good length. Closer to old style Chanson.

This wine sustained its brisk, cool feel despite the heat and early harvest of 2020, the vines sustained by the clay soils of the site. Its robust, cherry-pit flavors are bitter at first, with a stemmy greenness that slowly evolves toward umami. A day later, the wine has stature and elegance, showing, even at this young age, an orientation and inclination toward food.

Expressive red and black fruit along with a hint of menthol on the nose. The texture is firm and fairly tannic, but there is enough extract and freshness to ensure that this lingers pleasantly. Chanson is the second biggest owner here, after Drouhin. They have 2ha of Pinot, planted in 1965 and 1972 in fairly light soils near the border with Pommard. The grapes were picked ripe and partially destemmed before fermenting with a gentle extraction.

This wine opens with a very floral nose of violet and geranium that intertwines with a subtle vein of crème de cassis, creating an intriguing nose. On the palate, flavors of Gala apple and violet persist through the midpalate, underpinned with its floral bed. Pair with roasted pork chops with fruit-based sauces to gently reveal this wine’s complexity.

This expressive, solidly built red is hallmarked by floral, sandalwood and spice aromas, with flavors of cherry and plum. Despite the dense tannins, this is balanced and long.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

While the city represents the epicenter of wine production in Burgundy, the term, “Beaune” also refers to the specific sub-appellation of the greater Côte de Beaune, whose vineyards climb up the pastoral slopes that border the city to its west. Originally founded as a Roman camp by Julius Caesar, the city of Beaune eventually became the seat of the dukes of Burgundy until the 13th century. Today it is home to top négociants such as Louis Jadot, Joseph Drouhin, Louis Latour, and Bouchard Père et Fils.

The appellation, dominated by Pinot Noir plantings, represents a lovely and charming place to begin to understand red Burgundy. Its sandy soils create light and supple, floral driven Pinot Noir. These wines are designed to be enjoyed within five to 10 years. The vineyards of Beaune span a broad swath of Premier Crus from Savigny-lès-Beaune to its border with Pommard.

Chardonnay acreage here has been increasing here in the more recent years.
