Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Catena Alta 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon presents a dark, opaque violet color with blackish tones. Very intense and concentrate wine. With aromas of ripe black fruits, hints of tobacco and vanilla from the French oak barrels. The palate is full and rich with concentrated flavors of cassis and spicy notes. Tannins that gives structure, bright, and lively acidity.

Professional Ratings

  • 91
The 2008 Catena Alta Cabernet Sauvignon was aged in 80% new French oak for 18 months and 24 months in bottle prior to release. Wood smoke, pencil lead, exotic spices, violets, and black currants set the stage for a savory, ripe, layered, and impeccably balanced wine with several years of aging potential. Drink this lengthy effort from 2013 to 2023.
  • 91
The '08 Alta Cabernet exhibits a riper and more voluptuous style than is typical for this label. At first, aromas and flavors of figs and chestnuts predominate, red fruit notes emerging after several hours. This needs bottle age to soften, or lamb on the grill.

Catena Laura Catena and the History of Malbec Winery Video

Bodega Catena Zapata is one of Argentina's high altitude Malbec pioneers. The Catena family began making wine in Mendoza in 1902. Nicolas Catena, third generation family vintner, was one of the first to see the potential of Mendoza's mountain vineyards for producing high quality Malbec. In 1994, he became the first Argentine to exprot a world-class bottling of Malbec under the Catena label. Nicolas is joined by his daughter, Dr. Laura Catena, in their relentless pursuit of world-class quality from the family's high altitude vineyards. Laura has done extensive work in introducing Malbec and other varietal plant selections, soil and climate analysis, and sustainable practices throughout Mendoza. Head winemaker, Alejandro Vigil, has been at Catena Zapata since 2002 and works with Laura and Nicolas to make wines that express the family's vineyards and palate.
