The sixties were hard years for Chianti Classico: an economic and technical crisis was passing through the Chianti agriculture, anchored to old production models.

A visionary mind, that of Cavalier Armando Nunzi, managed to convince a group of winemakers to adhere to an innovative idea: to find a modern social winery capable of collecting and vinifying the grapes of future members. So it was that on 21 June 1965 the Cavalier Gualtiero Armando Nunzi together with a first group of 17 winemakers met under the name of Castelli del Grevepesa. The common aim was to bring together more people from the various areas of the Florentine Chianti Classico to protect the territory and keep the centuries-old traditions of Tuscan viticulture intact: that old-fashioned know-how that the peasant workers still pass down from generation to generation in generation. The goal was ambitious: to produce high quality wines in compliance with the strict rules of the Law and the then Gallo Nero Consortium (now the Chianti Classico Consortium), by carefully selecting the grapes and a rigorous and controlled wine-making process. The symbol was chosen for the iris, commonly called iris, flower that arises spontaneously between the Val di Greve and the Val di Pesa. A perennial flower, it manages to resist the torrid heat and the cold of winter: a symbol of the solidity of the Castelli del Grevepesa and of the inseparable link with the Florentine culture and its traditions.

More than 50 years have passed and today Castelli del Grevepesa brings together over 120 member companies. The largest Chianti Classico family, which with passion and hard work produces high quality wines, accessible to all, recognized and appreciated all over the world.

Every strip of land, every single vineyard, have a history, a microclimate and a specific, particular soil, cultivated and cared for with passion and skill by the owner families according to secular ways and rules. Most of the associated companies of Castelli del Grevepesa are located in the municipalities of Greve in Chianti, San Casciano Val di Pesa, Tavarnelle Val di Pesa and Barberino Val d'Elsa . In addition to these, Castelli del Grevepesa can also count on the grapes produced by the associates of San Gimignano and the Maremma Toscana. The Castelli del Grevepesa agricultural cooperative is in Via Gabbiano, 34 - 50026 San Casciano Val di Pesa (FI).

Legendary in Italy for its Renaissance art and striking landscape, Tuscany is also home to many of the country’s best red wines. Sangiovese reigns supreme here, as either the single varietal, or a dominant player, in almost all of Tuscany’s best.

A remarkable Chianti, named for its region of origin, will have a bright acidity, supple tannins and plenty of cherry fruit character. From the hills and valleys surrounding the medieval village of Montalcino, come the distinguished and age-worthy wines based on Brunello (Sangiovese). Earning global acclaim since the 1970s, the Tuscan Blends are composed solely of international grape varieties or a mix of international and Sangiovese. The wine called Vine Nobile di Montepulciano, composed of Prognolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and is recognized both for finesse and power.
