Winemaker Notes

The White Label 2014 is extraordinarily unique throughout the history of Casanova di Neri.  For the first time since 1978 this Brunello is a blend between White Label, Tenuta Nuova and Cerretalto 2014 grapes. The black and bronze bands on the historical label remind that the last two have not been bottled in this year.

The 2014 vintage is one of the most elegant, complex and finest of ever. The color is bright red, and fresh hints of young red fruits mark the intense bouquet. In the mouth everything is perfectly balanced, from the vibrant acidity to the creaminess and the silky consistency. Tannins are extremely fine and precise. Persistent finish and endless aftertaste.

V 93
Vinous
Bright deep red. Perfumed nose of red cherry, Oriental spices, flint and graphite. Rich, dense and suave on entry, then lighter and more linear in the middle, but with a plush juicy mouthfeel that makes it hard to put the glass back down once you’ve started tasting it. Very pure black/red cherry and spice flavors linger impressively on the long, refreshing finish. A knockout 2014 Brunello that lacks the size of the bigger vintages (very appropriately, I may add, given what the 2014 growing season was like) but showcases enchanting purity and grace. Vey well done.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
This is the white label Brunello from Giacomo Neri and his son Giovanni. The 2014 Brunello di Montalcino is faithful to the vintage with a compact and streamlined style that suggests a near or medium-term drinking window. In general, I am hesitant to recommend this vintage for any significant cellar aging, and one reason is because these wines perform nicely straight out of the gate. The same goes for this relatively easy expression that is redolent of wild berry, rose hip, blue flower and moist potting soil. Because the Brunelli Tenuta Nuova and Cerretalto were not made in this vintage, this wine represents a blend of fruit from across the estate. This is the first time this has happened at Casanova di Neri.

James Suckling
Wild red fruit and orange zest with cedar and wild herbs. The cherries here are fresh and lively and the tannins cut a sturdy, even frame around impressively long, fresh flavors. The only Brunello made here in 2014; there are no single vineyard bottlings. Drink or hold.
D 92
Decanter
For the first time in Casanova di Neri's history, the white-label Brunello incorporates grapes usually destined for their Tenuta Nuova and Cerretalto bottlings. The grapes were given a brief maceration so as not to extract any bitter tannins, yielding an immediately approachable midweight red. Dusty cherry, cranberry and redcurrant notes grace the nose and palate, with red rose and white pepper lending complexity. The tannins are fine and provide a subtle grip, while taut, tart acidity demands a rich, meaty pasta sauce. This will sit well at the dinner table. Drinking Window 2019 - 2027

Wine Spectator
Alluring aromas and flavors of pure cherry, raspberry and wild rose mark this round red. The firm structure is well-integrated and the finish echoes the fruit, while adding a mineral element. Offers a tactile, chalky finish.

Casanova di Neri Casanova di Neri’s Vineyards Winery Image

Casanova di Neri was established in 1971, when Giovanni Neri acquired an estate not far from the town of Montalcino. In 1978 they produced their first Brunello di Montalcino. Over the years their continuing goal has been the search for land believed to be optimal for growing high quality grapes. In 1981 they released a single vineyard bottling from their four hectares amphitheater vineyard site in NE Montalcino, named Cerretalto.

In 1991, Giovanni’s son, Giacomo took over the management of the estate and the winemaking. Giacomo acquired vineyards in the southern part of Montalcino, which eventually became their Tenuta Nuova Brunello di Montalcino, which was first released in 1993.

Today, the estate has grown to include seven different vineyards in various parts of the denomination, totaling 156 acres of vines along with forested tracts, arable fields, and 50 acres of olive trees. The vineyards have been planted or replanted mostly with cuttings propagated from old Sangiovese vines in the Cerretalto vineyard that produced distinctive, high-quality fruit.

Giacomo’s sons, Giovanni & Gianlorenzo are at his side at the winery. Giovanni is working in winemaking & vineyard management while Gianlorenzo is focused on marketing and sales.

Famous for its bold, layered and long-lived red, Brunello di Montalcino, the town of Montalcino is about 70 miles south of Florence, and has a warmer and drier climate than that of its neighbor, Chianti. The Sangiovese grape is king here, as it is in Chianti, but Montalcino has its own clone called Brunello.

The Brunello vineyards of Montalcino blanket the rolling hills surrounding the village and fan out at various elevations, creating the potential for Brunello wines expressing different styles. From the valleys, where deeper deposits of clay are found, come wines typically bolder, more concentrated and rich in opulent black fruit. The hillside vineyards produce wines more concentrated in red fruits and floral aromas; these sites reach up to over 1,600 feet and have shallow soils of rocks and shale.

Brunello di Montalcino by law must be aged a minimum of four years, including two years in barrel before realease and once released, typically needs more time in bottle for its drinking potential to be fully reached. The good news is that Montalcino makes a “baby brother” version. The wines called Rosso di Montalcino are often made from younger vines, aged for about a year before release, offer extraordinary values and are ready to drink young.

Among Italy's elite red grape varieties, Sangiovese has the perfect intersection of bright red fruit and savory earthiness and is responsible for the best red wines of Tuscany. While it is best known as the chief component of Chianti, it is also the main grape in Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and reaches the height of its power and intensity in the complex, long-lived Brunello di Montalcino. Somm Secret—Sangiovese doubles under the alias, Nielluccio, on the French island of Corsica where it produces distinctly floral and refreshing reds and rosés.
