Deep ruby red, offering the eyes a preview of the wines complex structure, flavors, and aromas. Notes of rose and violet emerge in a slow, long-lasting progression, giving way to wild fruit, dried fig, preserves, and vanilla. The same aromatic equilibrium reappears in the mouth, releasing delicate progressions of fruit and spice. The rich, balanced flavor of this wine's components give it its distinctive imprint. And its extreme delicacy closes with ample, persistent flavors in the finish.

    The 2012 Amativo is an IGT Salento blend of 60% Primitivo and 40% Negroamaro from the "heel of the boot" of Italy. The wine is aged in oak for one year (90% French oak and 10% American oak) and displays a dark, impenetrable consistency with aromas of dark fruit, leather, tobacco and spice. Amativo shows great textural richness with soft tannins and a long, opulent mouthfeel.

    A medium- to full-bodied red, backed by firm yet plush tannins, with well-knit flavors of black currant, fig bread, smoky mineral, dried herb and melted licorice and a fresh finish. Drink now through 2022.

Italian Red Wine

While picturesque hillsides, endless coastlines and a favorable climate serve to unify the grape-growing culture of this country. The apparent never-ending world of indigenous grape varieties gives Italy an unexampled charm and allure for its red wines. From the steep inclines of the Alps to the sprawling, warm, coastal plains of the south, red grape varieties thrive throughout.

The kings of Italy, wines like Barolo and Barbaresco (made of Nebbiolo), and Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino (made of Sangiovese), as well as Amarone (mostly Corvina), play center stage for the most lauded, collected and cellar-worthy reds. Less popular but entirely deserving of as much praise are the wines made from Aglianico, Sagrantino and Nerello Mascalese.

For those accustomed to drinking New World reds, the south is the place to start. Grapes like Negroamaro or Primitvo from Puglia and Nero d’Avola from Sicily make soft, ammicable, full-bodied, fruit-dominant wines. Curious palates should be on the lookout for Cannonau (Grenache), Lagrein, Teroldego, Ruché, Freisa, Cesanese, Schiopettino, Rossese and Gaglioppo to name a few.
