Winemaker Notes

2019 was an exceptional vintage for Mallorcan wine, producing well-balanced wines with lots of character. The absence of rain was a key factor resulting in remarkably healthy grapes. The summer was warmer than in 2018, similar to 2017, but without the heatwaves. Some rain in July and moderate summer temperatures paved the way for a healthy harvest with yields 20% below normal. Wines from this vintage are of exceptional quality and personality.

The 2018 Supernova Negre was produced with Mantonegro from different vineyards across the Binissalem on red clay (call vermell) soils. The grapes from the different vineyards were fermented separately and matured in a combination of 500-liter oak barrels and 2,000- and 3,000-liter French oak vats for nine months. I see the similarities here that they told me Mantonegro can have with Garnacha, but they're more in a Châteauneuf way with a rustic and somehow earthy touch. The palate is medium-bodied and reveals fine tannins that contribute to the slightly dusty personality.

Spanish red wine is known for being bold, heady, rustic and age-worthy, Spain is truly a one-of-a-kind wine-producing nation. A great majority of the country is hot, arid and drought-ridden, and since irrigation has only been recently introduced and (controversially) accepted, viticulture has sustained—and flourished—only through a great understanding of Spain’s particular conditions. Large spacing between vines allows each enough resources to survive and as a result, the country has the most acreage under vine compared to any other country, but is usually third in production.

Of the Spanish red wines, the most planted and respected grape variety is Tempranillo, the star of Spain’s Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions. Priorat specializes in bold red blends, Jumilla has gained global recognition for its single varietal Monastrell and Utiel-Requena has garnered recent attention for its reds made of Bobal.
