    Winemaker Notes

Cakebread Cellars' Napa Valley Merlot displays a very black to purple color; has rich aromas, redolent with fruit; and flavors of blackberries, with subtle hints of black pepper. There are also aromas that hint of black tea leaves and a dried herb, possibly nutmeg. In the background, there is a delicate scent of cedar and vanilla. On the palate, there are fresh plum, black pepper as well as a drop of cassis and cherry-like flavors, which end with just a touch of French oak. As with all our wines, this Merlot is ready for dinner tonight, but it will continue to develop complexity over the next 3-5 years.

    Cakebread Cellars Winery Video

Over 30 years ago, Jack Cakebread came to photograph the Napa Valley for a book and while there, he casually mentioned his interest in one day owning a vineyard to some family friends who had a ranch in Rutherford. When he returned home that afternoon, the phone rang and it was the family friends offering to sell their property. He headed back up to the valley that same afternoon to make his best offer, and Cakebread Cellars was born.

As the Cakebread family reflects upon the many profound changes in the wine industry over the last 33 years, such as innovative farming techniques and new methods of reaching out to consumers, they note that their key values have remained the same. Dedication to making the highest quality wines and a commitment to family has followed a continuum as their first small vineyard has grown into a thriving internationally distributed wine company.

As Napa Valley’s third most planted grape, Napa Valley Merlot shows time and time again its potential to produce exceptional results. Napa’s vaunted combination of climate, soil and the human factor of winemaking expertise lead to big, ripe, cellar-worthy and world-class versions.

Whether made by itself in single varietal bottlings or as an important role in Bordeaux Blends, Merlot continues a prominent role in this famous region. While Cabernet typically takes the lead role, Merlot’s contribution—even at 10% to 20% or so—is significant indeed. Often described as “the flesh on Cabernet’s bones,” Merlot lends a soft, round and plush character that beautifully complements Cabernet’s linear, full-throttle structure. Its flavors of plums plus subtle herbs and mint also dovetail nicely with Cabernet’s blackberry and cassis.
