Winemaker Notes

A beautiful interplay between the lively acidity that is the hallmark of the vintage and the density and lushness that Buccella wines represent. Aromas of black cherry, cassis, and black plum mingle with notes of molasses, cocoa, and baking spices. The palate showcases a velvet texture, coffee and dark chocolate flavors, and a rich finish of black fruit.

Professional Ratings

Both of these wines showed well, with the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon (94% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc) revealing slightly more structure as well as a more reserved style. This impressive endowed 2009 exhibits lots of creme de cassis, licorice, violets and new oak. A big, full-bodied wine with tannin to shed, so it may require some additional bottle age. Both wines are multi-AVAs from five vineyards spread across Napa Valley. It should last two decades.

A rich, velvety red with sweet-berry and cherry character. Full body, velvety tannins and a medium finish. This needs three to four years of bottle age to soften.

  • 91

Richly layered and impressive, this is made in a fruit-forward, oaky style. The blackberry and cassis flavors are wrapped in tiers of toast and caramel, with soft, luscious tannins providing structure. It finishes with a fine, firm minerality, like a lick of lead pencil.

Intense and potent, with a rich mix of lead pencil, graphite, dark and dried berry, cedar and anise flavors. Maintains its intensity and persistence on the long, chewy finish. Drink now through 2022.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
