Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

This is one of the most exciting projects of winemaking consultant Mark Herold. Unfortunately, only 325 cases of the 2003 were produced, and there will probably be even less of the 2004. The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon, which was superb from cask, is even more spectacular from bottle. Its dense, opaque black/purple color is accompanied by scents of graphite interwoven with creme de cassis, charcoal, espresso roast, and spice box. This layered, full-bodied, elegant effort possesses wonderful purity as well as definition. Bottled unfined and unfiltered after 20 months in 100% new French oak, it should drink beautifully for 15 plus years.

Impressive. Supple and harmonious, with rich, polished currant, herb, mocha and wild berry flavors that are intense and concentrated, offering power with finesse. Shows a dash of heat on the finish, but fans of full-throttle Cabernet won't be disappointed.

It was William and Alicia Deem's first date. They were two individuals with distinct dreams, until their common love of wine started them on a wonderful journey together. Their passion drove them to begin the pursuit of a shared dream in 2002 – quite simply –to make the best wine they could. The Deems savor wine for its ability to make connections, create memories, and nourish the true enjoyment of life. Buccella handcrafts limited production Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Rebekah Wineburg is their winemaker and Celia Welch is consultant winemaker.

Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
