Winemaker Notes

Always brimming with sweet red fruits, the Cygnus shows red plum, red cherry and even a hint of strawberry in the 2018 vintage. The ample fruit is supported by a judicious use of oak, lending just a hint of vanilla and baking spices to the nose. As with all Cygnus Block Pinots, the 2018 expresses a wonderful clarity of fruit and site.

The 2018 Pinot Noir Cygnus Block has a gorgeous, earthy expression! It features elegantly degraded scents of sour cherries, Italian plums, truffle, tobacco and savory herbs. The medium-bodied palate's intense core of ripe red fruit is enlivened by bursts of refreshing acidity and supported by finely grainy tannins, and it has a hauntingly long, savory finish. It's in a beautiful spot for drinking, although it will continue to gain savory complexity over the next decade or more.

Complex from the get-go, this marries brambly red fruits to light streaks of caramel, toasted hazelnuts and buttery toast. It's made from the unusual Swan clone, a California import that dates from the 1800s. Robert Brittan planted three acres of it in 2008 at his estate vineyard. The flavors are unique and persistent, with underlying minerality and lovely texture. One-quarter was aged in new French oak.

Home of some of the planet’s most amazingly elegant and expressive Pinot noir, the Willamette Valley is a pastoral, mixed landscape of green, bucolic rolling hills, dramatic forestlands and small, independent, friendly wine growers. As a leader in environmental stewardship, the valley has some of the nation’s most protective land use policies, with two-thirds of its vineyards farmed sustainably and over half, organically. While the valley claims a cool, continental climate, and is heavily influenced by the cold, moist winds of the Pacific Ocean, its warm and dry summers allow for the steady, even ripening of Pinot noir.

The potential of Willamette Valley Pinot noir continues to attract the investment of serious growers and winemakers both locally and from abroad, as naturally the finished wines bring accolades from professionals and enthusiasts. With a range of styles from delicate dried cherry, raspberry and hibiscus to stronger notes of truffle, mocha, plum and spice, a fine Willamette Valley Pinot noir is a perfect expression of both character and grace.
