Winemaker Notes

Situated 5km north of Beaune, this village was mentioned in 936 for the first time but only took on its present name of Savigny-Lès-Beaune in 1863. Vineyards have been planted here for a long time at an altitude of 220 to 360 meters on particularly chalky ground which is what gives the wines of Savigny such great refinement. Bouchard Père & Fils owns 3.15 hectares here.

On the nose, overflowing with red fruit. On the palate, the wine is pleasantly delicate. Should be drunk in its youth to enjoy its freshness.

COMMENTARY: Savigny-lès-Beaune is often the prettiest of wines from the Côte de Beaune, and the 2017 Bouchard Père & Fils is that and more. TASTING NOTES: This is a full-flavored wine with plenty of brightness. Its aromas and flavors of alluring red fruits should provide a superb pairing with grilled lamb chops. This elegant red exudes pretty cherry, strawberry and spice aromas and flavors. Firms up and gathers a stony note. Well-balanced, with fruit, earth and stone accents lingering. Best from 2022 through 2033.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

Savigny-lès-Beaune is a small village near Beaune that produces delightful red and white wines under its own appellation name. Cut by a river, the vineyards on its southern side have sandy soils that result in charming, floral reds. Premiers Crus vineyards on this side include Les Peuillets, Les Narbantons, Les Rouvrettes and Les Marconnets.

On Savigny’s northern side, bordering Pernand-Vergelles, vineyards are planted on rocky soils and produce juicy and spicy Pinot Noir. The village’s best whites, all made of Chardonnay, are full on the palate and abound in texture, complexity and freshness.
