Winemaker Notes

One of the eno-existential errands at which we can shine like the fight of a thousand suns is our unprecedented ability to ripen Sangiovese grapes to a sublimely exquisite and decadent level without simultaneously creating oceanic volumes of so much prunejuice. At least the stuff that emerges from the relatively cool, long growing season of southern Monterey County, possesses a wonderfully vibrant fruitiness, a lively acidity, in sum, a rambunctious not of raspberry and more red fruits than are dreamt of in heaven and on earth - rubis cubed, if not vertiginously multiplied out into n-space. We have included a substantial percentage of Syrah in the blend - a most felicitous complimentarity of vinous humours. Sang is the blood and Syrah perhaps the sublimely piquant qi that courses through the subtle body. Varietal composition: 77% Sangiovese, 12% Syrah, 11% Mourvedre.

Among Italy's elite red grape varieties, Sangiovese has the perfect intersection of bright red fruit and savory earthiness and is responsible for the best red wines of Tuscany. While it is best known as the chief component of Chianti, it is also the main grape in Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and reaches the height of its power and intensity in the complex, long-lived Brunello di Montalcino. Somm Secret—Sangiovese doubles under the alias, Nielluccio, on the French island of Corsica where it produces distinctly floral and refreshing reds and rosés.

The largest and perhaps most varied of California’s wine-growing regions, the Central Coast produces a good majority of the state's wine. This vast California wine district stretches from San Francisco all the way to Santa Barbara along the coast, and reaches inland nearly all the way to the Central Valley.

Encompassing an extremely diverse array of climates, soil types and wine styles, it contains many smaller sub-AVAs, including San Francisco Bay, Monterey, the Santa Cruz Mountains, Paso Robles, Edna Valley, Santa Ynez Valley and Santa Maria Valley.

While the Central Coast California wine region could probably support almost any major grape varietiy, it is famous for a few Central Coast reds and whites. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel are among the major ones. The Central Coast is home to many of the state's small, artisanal wineries crafting unique, high-quality wines, as well as larger producers also making exceptional wines.
