Winemaker Notes

Ramon Bilbao's Gran Reserva 1998 features a tawny rim framing a lovely deep, ruby-red wine, with a dark cherry core. The aromas are very complex and open up after some airing, leading to balsamic fragrances, very ripe fruit and prominent quality wood. Leather and tobacco, with notes of fruits in liqueur, also appear. It has a well-balanced taste, with appreciable notes of cedar and coffee liqueur, leading to a long, persistent finish.

"This shares the rose-garden aromatics of Bilbao's 2001, a dark, earthy complexity joined here to a more delicate, gentle red. Oak age has turned the texture to velvet and contributed a range of spices, from cinnamon to cedar and licorice. Tightly built, this is suited to roast leg of lamb with rosemary, or to several more years of aging." -Wine & Spirits, Sept 2007

Hailed as the star red variety in Spain’s most celebrated wine region, Tempranillo from Rioja, or simply labeled, “Rioja,” produces elegant wines with complex notes of red and black fruit, crushed rock, leather, toast and tobacco, whose best examples are fully capable of decades of improvement in the cellar.

Rioja wines are typically a blend of fruit from its three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental, although specific sub-region (zonas), village (municipios) and vineyard (viñedo singular) wines can now be labeled. Rioja Alta and Alavesa, at the highest elevations, are considered to be the source of the brightest, most elegant fruit, while grapes from the warmer and drier, Rioja Oriental, produce wines with deep color, great body and richness.
