Blandy's Bual Madeira (500ml) 2003 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

Golden color with green reflections. Characteristic bouquet of Madeira with exotic wood, dry fruits, dates, vanilla, cacau and fine toasted oak. Medium sweet and full-bodied, with a long toffee and vanilla aftertaste.

It is a superb accompaniment to desserts, especially fruit cakes, apple crumble or pecan pie.

This is a young wine in Madeira terms. That means it is full of fruit, with bitter orange and ginger to balance the acidity. The wine is sweet, always cut with that acidity and with a burnt character in the background. It is ready to drink, although some bottle age will still make it even better. Drink now and for decades.

Open-knit in feel, with friendly date, caramel, bergamot and hazelnut cream notes mixed together and backed by a light hint of green tea that adds some cut on the rounded finish. Drink now.

A steep, volcanic island in the Atlantic Ocean that rises to over 6,000 feet at its highest point, Madeira actually sits closer to Morocco than Portugal, the country to which it belongs.

Today the vineyards of the island cover tiny step-like terraces called poios, carved from the basalt bedrock. Aptly named Madeira, this fortified wine comes in two main styles. Blended Madeira is mostly inexpensive wine but there are a few remarkable aged styles. Single varietal Madeira (made from Sercial, Verdelho, Boal or Malmsey), is usually the highest quality and has the potential to improve in the bottle for decades.
