Winemaker Notes

An intriguing nose of florals and citrus, evoking finger lime, elderflowers and wet mill stone. A latticework of creamy citrus flavors entwined with the unrelenting drive of steely acidity and powdery minerality.

A wine style that started a minor revolution in Australia when it was first made, with extended skin contact, wild fermentation and maturation on lees in foudre. Each vintage it tingles and impresses and in a good year like 2021, it excels. Jasmine florals, bergamot, lime cordial, lemon curd and peach-skin aromas. A wine of some complexity and nuance, featuring bright, vibrant fruits, soft mealy texture with a hint of savouriness. Seamless and sustained.

The 2021 Foudre Ferment Riesling was elected Wine of the Year 2023 by a national wine publication here, and it impressed many for its combination of quality and value for the money. There are Golden Delicious apples on the nose, followed by lemon verbena and an undercurrent of creamy lees in the mouth. The thing I like about this wine is the pluming/expansive mid-palate of flavor. This things goes and goes. There's lovely definition of phenolics through the finish. It's textural, cloth-y, focused and very good.

Riesling possesses a remarkable ability to reflect the character of wherever it is grown while still maintaining its identity. A regal variety of incredible purity and precision, this versatile grape can be just as enjoyable dry or sweet, young or old, still or sparkling and can age longer than nearly any other white variety. Somm Secret—Given how difficult it is to discern the level of sweetness in a Riesling from the label, here are some clues to find the dry ones. First, look for the world “trocken.” (“Halbtrocken” or “feinherb” mean off-dry.) Also a higher abv usually indicates a drier Riesling.

Nestled into the tip of its southeastern coastline, Victoria is Australia’s smallest mainland state, second most populous and third largest wine producer. Victoria includes the cool regions of Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula and Geelong, made famous mainly by impressive Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The more inland Heathcote and Bendigo lead the way for complex and textured, full-bodied reds. Rutherglen’s fortified wines compete among the best on the planet.
