Winemaker Notes

This wine comes from several vineyards planted across the distinct and wonderful terroirs of Sonoma County The hope is to make a wine that is perfumed and fresh but a bit more approachable in its youth. Picked at moderate ripeness levels to preserve varietal character, this was aged in predominately older oak barrels.

Drink now with some air or hold for up to a decade or more.

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma County) is elegant, polished and so pure. Precise, with gorgeous aromatic intensity, this rushes forth with sweet floral notes, red-toned fruit, mint, orange peel an spice. The 2022 is exquisite, delicious and very pretty. Dollops of Cabernet Franc and Malbec round out the blend.

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County is a blend from several sites, though the backbone of its fruit comes from Bedrock estate vineyard and includes 6% Malbec from Los Carneros. As with the 2023, it saw a delicate hand in the cellar, with 15 % new oak barrels, as the winemakers are striving for a more classic and aromatically driven style. The nose offers notes of blackcurrants, cocoa, tobacco, and woodsy earth. Full-bodied, it has great aromatics and is savory on the palate. It retains very good freshness, with ripe tannins and a clean lift through the finish.

Half of the fruit for the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon comes from 15 acres of the grape planted at Bedrock Vineyard, which in the past was sold to another winery. Owner and winemaker Morgan Twain-Peterson, MW says, noting that much of the rest of the fruit is declassified from the Monte Rosso and Montecillo single-vineyard Cabernets. Deep ruby-purple, it offers detailed scents of blackcurrant, blueberry, violet, juniper and thyme. The full-bodied palate is light on its feet with juicy acidity, soft, supple tannins nestled into its perfumed fruit and a long, iron-laced finish.

While Sonoma County is acclaimed—and rightfully so—for its Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Zinfandels, it also produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Of the region’s 18 American Viticultural Areas, only a handful produce top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon. These appellations include Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Sonoma Valley and Dry Creek Valley. Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignons made in these appellations can offer a complex array of aromas and flavors. Fruit notes such as blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, black cherry and raspberry often are accompanied by hints of graphite, dusty earth, cigar box, toast and vanilla. The varietal has a rich history in Sonoma, and some of these Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet-based blends rival the best from Napa Valley.
