Winemaker Notes

The base of wine is composed around the ancient plantings of Mourvedre at Bedrock Vineyard and Pagani Ranch, the rest of the blend is composed of dry-farmed Grenache planted in the 1880’s at Gibson Ranch in McDowell Valley and Carignane from the 1950’s planted on soils that remind the winemaker of Pauillac in Ukiah.

    COMMENTARY: The 2018 Bedrock Wine Co. Ode to Lulu is a beautiful and well-made Rosé. TASTING NOTES: This wine is delicate and fresh. Pair its aromas and flavors of ripe red fruit, chalk, and rocks with grilled bone-in chicken thighs. (Tasted: May 17, 2019, San Francisco, CA)

    Pale to medium salmon-pink in color, the 2018 Ode to Lulu Old Vine Rosé, from vines planted in 1922, is scented of yellow peach, raspberries, cantaloupe and fresh chopped herbs with notions of crushed rock and saline. The light to medium-bodied palate gives up oodles of ripe fruit layers tempered by a mineral streak and mouthwatering acidity, finishing long and flavorful.

Bedrock Wine Co. was founded in 2007 by Morgan Twain-Peterson in a 550 square-foot, former chicken coop with 8 foot ceilings and no fermentation space. After six years of Bedrock being a one-man-show, Morgan was able to talk his best friend, Chris Cottrell, into moving to California from New York to join him. They now happily have a little more space to move around in but share the same objectives that guided the winery at the start.

The winery’s objectives are:

To channel the fruit of ancient vines into powerful, elegant, and distinctly Californian wines.
To spread the gospel of Syrah in California by sourcing fruit from great terroirs throughout the North Coast.
To proclaim the greatness of Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon by sparing no expense on wines of uniqueness and personality.
To reclaim rose’ from the excesses of saignee and focus on precision, delicacy, aromatics, and food friendliness.
To make fascinating and quixotic white wines from unique sites and interesting varietals.
To dream big but keep production low!

Whether it’s playful and fun or savory and serious, most rosé today is not your grandmother’s White Zinfandel, though that category remains strong. Pink wine has recently become quite trendy, and this time around it’s commonly quite dry. Since the pigment in red wines comes from keeping fermenting juice in contact with the grape skins for an extended period, it follows that a pink wine can be made using just a brief period of skin contact—usually just a couple of days. The resulting color depends on grape variety and winemaking style, ranging from pale salmon to deep magenta.

Responsible for the vast majority of American wine production, if California were a country, it would be the world’s fourth largest wine-producing nation. Sonoma County is best known for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Rosé and Zinfandel. The Central Coast has carved out a niche with Rhône Blends based on Grenache and Syrah, while Mendocino has found success with cool climate varieties such as Pinot noir, Riesling and Gewürztraminer. With all the diversity that California wine has to offer, any wine lover will find something to get excited about here.
