Winemaker Notes

The 2023 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is youthful and bright, opening with a generous burst of blackberry and ripe plum, interwoven with rich layers of cocoa bean, molasses, and chocolate-covered cherries. Subtle hints of toasted hazelnut skin lend a nutty warmth, while a streak of ripe strawberry adds a lifted, high-toned contrast to the darker fruit core. The palate is medium-bodied in density with a lively structure and freshness in acidity that emphasizes its red-fruited profile. Notes of sweet Bing cherry and red raspberry take center stage, offering a fresh, juicy palate that carries through to a long, raspberry sorbet-like finish. Underpinning the fruit is a fine thread of dark chocolate, which adds nuance and depth. Fine-grained, felt-like tannins provide a soft but structured backbone, supporting the wine’s vibrant character and promising a graceful evolution in bottle.

This Cabernet is mouth pleasing and approachable, making it the perfect accompaniment to grilled meat dishes like beef tenderloin, duck breast with cherry glaze or roasted rosemary encrusted lamb chops, or pair alongside aged cheeses or mushroom risotto.

Blend: 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Malbec, 4% Petite Syrah, 2% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc

Succulent, layered and generous, with aromas of blueberry confit, violets, sweet spices and potpourri. The palate is tightly wound, with concentrated yet fresh dark fruit, melting tannins and bright acidity. An excellent release of this wine with all the traditional hallmarks. Drink or hold.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
