Winemaker Notes

Deep cherry red, very thick. Radient and charming aromas which recall ripe grapes on a light base of wood. It possesses the palate and takes over sophistical and complex sensations. Opulent, dry and tannic with a nice sweet and surrounding aftertaste.

The 2004 Baron de Magana is a blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Tempranillo aged for 14 months in 70% new French oak. Inky purple, it has an alluring perfume of pain grille, pencil lead, wood smoke, blackberry, and black currant. Ripe, sweet, and more structured than the Dignus, it merits 3-5 years of additional cellaring and should drink well through 2018.

Navarra is rapidly becoming recognized as the source of some of Spain's best value wines. The Magana brothers were among the first to see the potential of the area, especially for the classic Bordeaux grape varieties. During the 1970's they planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec in their 60 hectares of vineyards. Later they added Syrah and Tempranillo.

Spanish red wine is known for being bold, heady, rustic and age-worthy, Spain is truly a one-of-a-kind wine-producing nation. A great majority of the country is hot, arid and drought-ridden, and since irrigation has only been recently introduced and (controversially) accepted, viticulture has sustained—and flourished—only through a great understanding of Spain’s particular conditions. Large spacing between vines allows each enough resources to survive and as a result, the country has the most acreage under vine compared to any other country, but is usually third in production.

Of the Spanish red wines, the most planted and respected grape variety is Tempranillo, the star of Spain’s Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions. Priorat specializes in bold red blends, Jumilla has gained global recognition for its single varietal Monastrell and Utiel-Requena has garnered recent attention for its reds made of Bobal.
