Winemaker Notes

The wine exhibits a beautiful purple core and medium ruby rim with intense dark currant, black cherry and raspberry black olive on the nose. In addition, there is deep graphite minerality as well as cooking chocolate. Upon tasting the body is full and viscous, and the deep dark chocolate becomes really apparent. This is matched by blackberry and pencil lead. The chalky tannins are tighter than the 2005; the wine all around is firmer, with a long wild berry finish. The structure of this wine will demand a minimum of 3 years aging but should continue to age gracefully over the next 10-12 years.

Made in the modern, cult Napa style, this Cab, from a vineyard north of St. Helena, is tremendously rich, soft and oaky. It strikes you with effusive flavors of ripe black currants, chocolate, anise and cedar, but most impressive is the smooth quality of the tannins. Youthfully brash now, it should gather forces and mellow out after 2010 and beyond.

Barnett Vineyards Winery Video
Barnett Vineyards is located at the top of Spring Mountain with spectacular views of the Napa Valley 1700' below. Founded in 1983 by Fiona and Hal Barnett, this rocky mountainside is ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and the blending varietals of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. In 1984, the first vines were planted in terraced rows with total plantings numbering fourteen acres by 1988. The vines yield an average of less than two tons of fruit per acre resulting in rich, intense wines that have become synonymous with the Barnett name.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
