Winemaker Notes

The resulting wines tend toward the so-called “Roulot-school” of Meursault, more tensile and racy, as opposed to the fatter, honeyed and nutty style of wines that dominated the landscape 20-30 years ago. There is excellent terroir-delineation, which is exciting given the exceptional range of 1er Crus and lieux-dits that Ballot has in his arsenal. On the red side, it is nice to discover slightly more graceful expressions of these often more “four square” appellations, without compromising the expression of the underlying sites.

A cool, airy and elegant nose of red pinot fruit, violet, lavender and earth is pretty but reticent today. The medium weight flavors are not quite as concentrated or powerful but they're markedly finer, all wrapped in a minerally, sweet and sneaky long finish. A classic Péz.

Ballot-Millot, France
The properties belonging to these two families have been handed down through ten generations, resulting in this impressive collection of vineyards. Philippe Ballot and his wife, Aleth, can each point to two grandfathers who were vignerons. Their marriage united some of the Cote de Beaune's holding belonging to Aleth's side of the family, and are en fermage (rented) from her uncle. A portion of their production is sold to local negociants, but all wines are vinified, aged and bottled at the domaine. To taste there is to enjoy a rare level of hospitality.

Pommard Wine

Cote de Beaune, Burgundy

Representing some of the darkest, deepest and sturdiest Pinot Noir of Burgundy, Pommard is one of the two villages in Côte de Beaune—along with Volnay—that is recognized for its impressive Pinot Noir. While it can’t boast any Grands Crus vineyards, its extraordinary Premiers Crus vineyards are aplenty.

Les Pézerolles, Les Épenots, Clos des Épeneaux, Les Chanlins, Les Jarolières, Les Fremiers and particularly Les Rugiens are among the most outstanding Premiers Crus.

The best Pommards will be concentrated in flavors such as black cherry, blackberry and dark chocolate, have dazzling aromas of violets, menthol or wild herbs and a firm and powerful finish. They typically demand some time in the bottle to reach their peak.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”
