    Winemaker Notes

Expect notes of stewed cherry, coffee bean and strawberry. With hints of a darker, wilder side, this wine exhibits subtle undertones of dried fynbos. On the palate, this Pinotage has a juicy mouth-feel with supple, sweet tannins.

The fruity style of this wine ensures that it enjoyable on its own or as an accompaniment to lamb, spicy fare and hearty, Italian-style dishes.

    Backsberg, South Africa
Klein Babylonstoren (the small tower of Babylon) was purchased by CL Back, an immigrant from Lithuania, in 1916. Over the years the farming activities have shifted from being a mixed farm with fruit, vineyards, grain and livestock to primarily a fruit farm producing over a thousand tons of peaches, to predominantly a wine farm by 1970.

Second generation owner Sydney Back came to the farm in 1936. He took the estate to great heights through a combination of hard work and innovative ideas.

Third generation owner Michael Back joined the family business in 1976. Over the years the estate has grown to its present size of almost 300 ha through the selective purchase of additional land in the neighbourhood. A young fourth generation awaits their opportunity to carry on the tradition of fine wine and brandy making.

Flanked by majestic mountains on either side, the Paarl district is a valley whose most valuable water source is the Berg River. While sometimes during dry and hot summers, the vineyards in the valley need supplemental irrigation, those vineyards on the eastern slopes where water retention is better, aren't irrigated.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc enjoy great success in Paarl.

South Africa’s signature grape, Pinotage is a distinctively earthy and rustic variety. In 1924 viticulturists crossed finicky Pinot Noir and productive, heat-tolerant Cinsault, and created a variety both darker and bolder than either of its parents! Today it is popular in South Africa both as a single varietal wine and in Cape blends. Somm Secret—The name “Pinotage” is a subtle portmanteau. The Pinot part is obvious, but the second half is a bit confusing. In the early 1900s, Cinsault was known in South Africa as “Hermitage”—hence Pinotage.
