A powerful wine that deserves patience. It shows violets, roses, black cherries and earth on the nose. The attack is powerful and extracted, with muscular tannins, refreshing acidity and a medium to full body. Austere at the moment. Try after 2027, but best from 2030.

Intensely spiced and enveloping in the glass, the 2021 Barolo Cerretta pours a more saturated, youthful red color and lifts with aromas of medicinal herbs, menthol, orange peel, white pepper, and cranberries. The palate is resonant with elegant, fresh red fruit, ripe tannins, and a gracefully long finish that tapers to savory and pleasant notes of apricot and leather on the back palate. This highly appealing wine will continue to improve and drink well over the next 15-20 years.

Responsible for some of the most elegant and age-worthy wines in the world, Nebbiolo, named for the ubiquitous autumnal fog (called nebbia in Italian), is the star variety of northern Italy’s Piedmont region. Grown throughout the area, as well as in the neighboring Valle d’Aosta and Valtellina, it reaches its highest potential in the Piedmontese villages of Barolo, Barbaresco and Roero. Outside of Italy, growers are still very much in the experimentation stage but some success has been achieved in parts of California.
