Winemaker Notes

#59 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2025

Artuke is a small family winery located in Baños de Ebro, a village in Rioja Alavesa on the banks of the Ebro river. In 1991, Roberto de Miguel made the decision to stop producing bulk wine and start bottled wine. Now his children Arturo and Kike, (whose names are the basis of the winery) are leading the project. Their grow is based on recuperating abandoned vineyards, and making new single vineyard wines. One of the two village wines. This one comes from a vineyard higher in altitude than Artuke. Richer than Artuke thanks to the oak aging. Red fruit, licorice, still very fresh and bright.

An enticing red, showing appealing aromas and flavors of black raspberry coulis, warm fig, violet and mountain herbs, plus a stony mineral character. Animated by bright acidity, this shows good length, with a pleasing touch of tension focusing the light, chewy finish. Tempranillo and Graciano. Drink now through 2030.

Hailed as the star red variety in Spain’s most celebrated wine region, Tempranillo from Rioja, or simply labeled, “Rioja,” produces elegant wines with complex notes of red and black fruit, crushed rock, leather, toast and tobacco, whose best examples are fully capable of decades of improvement in the cellar.

Rioja wines are typically a blend of fruit from its three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental, although specific sub-region (zonas), village (municipios) and vineyard (viñedo singular) wines can now be labeled. Rioja Alta and Alavesa, at the highest elevations, are considered to be the source of the brightest, most elegant fruit, while grapes from the warmer and drier, Rioja Oriental, produce wines with deep color, great body and richness.
