Argento Single Vineyard Altamira Malbec is an intense red color. Very aromatic, fresh, vibrant wine with red fruits and herbs. Great mineral character. Long on the palate and juicy, with complex finish.

    Alejandro Bulgheroni of Bodegas Garzón in Uruguay took over this property in 2012, where vineyard manager Cecilia Acosta now oversees over 1,000 acres of vineyards around Mendoza. This wine comes from their organically farmed Altamira vineyard, planted at 3,609 feet above sea level on varied soils including sand, silt and large rocks covered by calcium carbonate. Winemaker Juan Pablo Murgia ferments this wine in stainless steel and ages 75 percent of it for 10 months in 5,000-liter foudres, the remainder in concrete. It’s aromatic malbec, bursting with florals and crunchy plum flavors while retaining a certain desert coolness. The wine knits together its phases like a rope, intertwining the aromatic, burly and rich, lasting on powerful tannins and a toffee scent to match an equally rich beef stew.

    The aromatic nose offers intense flowers, plum and black cherry notes with touches of licorice and dried herbs. The palate is plush, with plenty of black fruit blended with spices and subtle oak flavors. This is a shining example of a fresher style of Argentina's iconic red grape.

Celebrated for its bold flavors and supple texture, Malbec has enjoyed runaway success in Argentina since the late 20th century. The grape originated in Bordeaux, France, where it historically contributed color and tannin to blends. A French agronomist, who saw great potential for the variety in Mendoza’s hot, high-altitude landscape, brought Malbec to Argentina in 1868. By far the largest and best-known winemaking province in Argentina, Mendoza is responsible for over 70% of the country’s enological output. Set in the eastern foothills of the Andes Mountains, the climate is dry and continental, presenting relatively few challenges for viticulturists during the growing season. Mendoza, divided into several distinctive sub-regions, including Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley, is the source of some of the country’s finest wines.

For many wine lovers, Mendoza is practically synonymous with Malbec. Originally a Bordelaise variety brought to Argentina by the French in the mid-1800s, here it found success and renown that it never knew in its homeland where a finicky climate gives mixed results. Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Pinot Noir are all widely planted here as well (and sometimes even blended with each other or Malbec). Mendoza's main white varieties include Chardonnay, Torrontés, Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon.
