Winemaker Notes

To describe a wine, it is necessary to find out about its origin – the landscape, the place, the environment from which it is born: this is the only way to fully understand its nature. Villa Donoratico is a decidedly consistent and complex wine that reveals a deep bond with the territory.

Blend: 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 10% Petit Verdot

COMMENTARY: One doesn't always have to think Bordeaux Left Bank or the Napa Valley when needing a Cabernet Sauvignon fix; Bolgheri is ready to answer the bell. The 2020 Argentiera Villa Donoratico is an outstanding wine. Made with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine shows excellent persistence. TASTING NOTES: This wine excels with aromas and flavors of dried earthy notes, black fruits, licorice, and oakiness. Enjoy it with the first cut from a prime rib. Layered and rich with aromas of cassis, luxurious oak spice, menthol, and lavender, the 2020 Villa Donoratico is full-bodied and maintains a characteristic soft and silky texture, with a long finish. Offering notes of rich kirsch, plum, and dusty earth, it is opulent, balanced, and a delicious expression for the range. Drink 2024-2034.

A chewy and rich red with blackberry, blueberry and chocolate aromas and flavors. Full-bodied. Lots of fruit and tannin structure. A little rough-edged now and needs three to four years to soften. Drink after 2025.

The 2020 Bolgheri Rosso Villa Donoratico shows ripe fruit and a greater oak presence with spice, tar, tobacco and smoked cedarwood. This full-bodied wine could almost be a Bolgheri Superiore, thanks to the depth, richness and importance of its flavor profile.

Sanguine, earthy and metallic on the nose, with stones, gunpowder, black plums, blackberries and then a riot of herbs. Chocolate and more berries appears on the palate on top of heat and earth.Mouth filling and rich, but not overly lush thanks to tannins that form a tight but flexible net around everything.

A fruity style, this red is packed with cherry, black currant, iron, tobacco and olive aromas and flavors. Delivers well-integrated tannins and fresh acidity, which keep this focused and frame the finish.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.

An outstanding wine region made famous by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who planted Cabernet Sauvignon vines for his own consumption in 1940s on his San Guido estate, and called the resulting wine, Sassicaia. Today the region’s Tuscan reds are based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, which can be made as single varietal wines or blends. The local Sangiovese can make up no more than 50% of the blends. Today Sassicaia has its own DOC designation within the Bogheri DOC appellation.
