Winemaker Notes

Aromas of plums and berries with some chocolate and vanilla undertones. Full-bodied and layered with soft tannins that are bright at the end. Currants and blackberries. Currant bush, too. Love the tannin texture to this. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot & Cabernet Franc.

Blend: 50% Caberbet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc

A beautifully fresh young wine with raspberries, blackcurrants, violets and lavender. Minerally. More blue fruit than in the past. Very racy and fine with a medium to full body and flavors of blue fruit, such as raspberry and blueberry The tannins show lovely harmony and precision. Vertical with energy. Drink after 2029.

The Argentiera 2021 Bolgheri Superiore Argentiera (a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc) is quite dense and rich, showing the bold intensity of the vintage in no uncertain terms. The wine feels too extracted to my tastes and marks quite a step up in richness compared to the thinner 2022 vintage that I tasted at the same time. The bouquet offers blackberry liqueur and syrupy black cherry with spicy notes. The tannins are fleshed out for the most part, with a point of bitterness that still needs to settle. The 2022 is thinner and easier to drink, but this 2021 needs a few more years of bottle age to iron out.

The 2021 Bolgheri Superiore Argentiera is a classy, polished red. Crushed flowers, mocha and cinnamon meld into a core of red-toned fruit. Aromatic and light on its feet, the 2021 offers plenty of Bolgheri richness, but in a restrained, vibrant style that is hugely appealing.

This red is intensely flavored yet also vibrant and linear, revealing blackberry, black currant, violet, vanilla and smoky oak notes. Firms up, showing fine balance in the end, with a lingering finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2033.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.

An outstanding wine region made famous by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who planted Cabernet Sauvignon vines for his own consumption in 1940s on his San Guido estate, and called the resulting wine, Sassicaia. Today the region’s Tuscan reds are based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, which can be made as single varietal wines or blends. The local Sangiovese can make up no more than 50% of the blends. Today Sassicaia has its own DOC designation within the Bogheri DOC appellation.
