Winemaker Notes

The Eisele Vineyard has again shown its ability to deliver wines of distinction in atypical vintages. The minerality and quality of tannins which are Eisele hallmarks couple with fine, generous texture to give us a delicious wine of particular vitality and elegance. 2011 Altagracia bears the signature of this unique place.

Blend: 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot

Critical Acclaim

JS 91
James Suckling
A wine with more focus and refinement than the 2010 with blueberry, mineral and slate character. Juicy and savory. Extremely well done for the second wine of Araujo. Iodine and stone. Drink or hold.

Since 1971, some of California's most ageworthy and intensely-flavored Cabernet Sauvignons have been made from grapes grown at the Eisele Vineyard, located on a benchland near the northern end of Napa Valley, just east of Calistoga. Protected by the Palisades Mountains to the north and cooled by westerly breezes from the Chalk Hill Gap, this 38-acre vineyard is planted on warm cobbly soils that produce a low-yielding crop of exceptionally concentrated fruit. Bart and Daphne Araujo acquired the Eisele Vineyard in 1990, and committed to producing only wines of the highest caliber and distinction. Araujo Estate produces 4 wines each vintage: Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard, Altagracia, Syrah Eisele Vineyard and Sauvignon Blanc Eisele Vineyard.

A major force on the global playing field, California is the world’s fourth largest wine-producing region on the planet and the majority of its land under vine is devoted to red varieties—they cover nearly double the vineyard acreage compared to whites.

While the state’s incredibly diverse terrain and microclimates allow for countless red wine styles, the one factor unifying all California red wine is the abundance of sunshine and a long, consistent growing season, which leads to well-developed and fully ripened fruit.

The most famous region today, of course, is the acclaimed Napa Valley, where Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Bordeaux blends garner global attention and in some cases, cult status.

Sonoma County, nestled between Napa Valley and the Pacific Ocean, claims great variability in geography and microclimates with vineyards climbing up mountains, reaching far into valleys and stretching along some the state’s most dramatic coastlines. Here world-class Pinot Noir is possible from Sonoma’s cooler sites while Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon do well in its warmer locations.

Winemaking in California dates back to the 18th century when Spanish missionaries planted the first wine grapes. But the industry experienced its first boom with the Gold Rush in the last half of the 19th century when miners brought the Zinfandel vine to the Sierra Foothills and Lodi. Now considered by many to be the state’s flagship grape, Zinfandel grows in virtually all of its regions, expressing different personalities in each.

The Central Coast and the Sierra Foothills also excel in the production of Zinfandel, and remain active new frontiers for Rhone and Spanish varieties.

Mendocino California’s cool North Coast region is a fantastic source of Pinot noir.
