Winemaker Notes

This wine delivers a wonderful combination of textures and expressiveness that are reminiscent of cassis and ripe plums with earthy nuances of nutmeg and roasted cocoa nib. The lingering mouth feel is smooth and seductive and possesses an elegance typical of the Eisele Vineyard.

There are 600 cases of the deep ruby/purple-colored 2001 Altagracia, a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 8% Petit Verdot. This seductive effort reveals more fruit, charm, and lushness than the structured, more narrow 2000. It should prove to be a crowd-pleaser if consumed over the next 7-8 years. The selection for this offering is not made in the vineyard, but rather in May, immediately before bottling.

Since 1971, some of California's most ageworthy and intensely-flavored Cabernet Sauvignons have been made from grapes grown at the Eisele Vineyard, located on a benchland near the northern end of Napa Valley, just east of Calistoga. Protected by the Palisades Mountains to the north and cooled by westerly breezes from the Chalk Hill Gap, this 38-acre vineyard is planted on warm cobbly soils that produce a low-yielding crop of exceptionally concentrated fruit. Bart and Daphne Araujo acquired the Eisele Vineyard in 1990, and committed to producing only wines of the highest caliber and distinction. Araujo Estate produces 4 wines each vintage: Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard, Altagracia, Syrah Eisele Vineyard and Sauvignon Blanc Eisele Vineyard.

Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
