Thanks to the cooler sites we work with, this Sauvignon Blanc has some of the liveliest aromatics that I have ever experienced in a wine and create a stunning mix of tropical notes and citrus married with decadent highlights of honey on the nose. The barrel-fermentation and aging creates an incredible richness on the palate which is balanced by significant bright, natural acidity. Fresh peaches, honeysuckle, and a crisp long finish make you eager for the next sip.
Blend: 96% Sauvignon Blanc, 4% Sémillon

This is a barrel-fermented white that impresses from start to finish, with 4% Sémillon added to the mix. A sublime white-peach flavor is layered and well-integrated within a stony texture. Offering length and breadth, this is defined by an exotic spice note that lingers.

COMMENTARY: The 2017 Aperture Sauvignon Blanc was a revelation. Since I had not been very familiar with this winery, I had little expectations save it was an SB from Sonoma County. TASTING NOTES: This wine is as pure and fine as one can find in the marketplace. Its aromas and flavors are of grape and location. From dried citrus to lively herbs, one can pair it with a simply prepared seafood dish. (Tasted: August 20, 2018, San Francisco, CA)

Never mind the six million album covers around the world that feature Andy Katz’s photographs, or his dozen books of gorgeous photos that grace countless coffee tables around the country, or the many awards on his mantel earned from five decades of work around the world. It was all an excuse. An excuse to drink world class wine. To learn what it takes to make world class wine. And to spend time with his young son Jesse. Andy brought Jesse to the the most famous vineyards on earth, from the heart of Burgundy to the hills of Tuscany. He may not have admitted it at the time, but Andy’s gambit worked. Barely a decade later, Jesse is now one of the most exciting — and accomplished — winemakers in the world, recently gracing the cover of Wine Enthusiast as a rising young star who is doing nothing less than “changing the way the world drinks.” The son of a man who, through his photographs, changes the way the world sees wine. It’s a perfect combination. Jesse supplies the grapes, Andy supplies the images. And together they make wines worthy of their travels. Aperture. World class wines. Katz and Katz. A world class pairing.
Capable of a vast array of styles, Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, refreshing variety that equally reflects both terroir and varietal character. Though it can vary depending on where it is grown, a couple of commonalities always exist—namely, zesty acidity and intense aromatics. This variety is of French provenance. Somm Secret—Along with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc is a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. That green bell pepper aroma that all three varieties share is no coincidence—it comes from a high concentration of pyrazines (herbaceous aromatic compounds) inherent to each member of the family.
Home to a diverse array of smaller AVAs with varied microclimates and soil types, Sonoma County has something for every wine lover. Physically twice as large as Napa Valley, the region only produces about half the amount of wine but boasts both tremendous quality and variety. With its laid-back atmosphere and down-to-earth attitude, the wineries of Sonoma are appreciated by wine tourists for their friendliness and approachability. The entire county intends to become a 100% sustainable winegrowing region by 2019.
Sonoma County wines are produced with carefully selected grape varieties to reflect the best attributes of their sites—Dry Creek Valley’s consistent sunshine is ideal for Zinfandel, while the warm Alexander Valley is responsible for rich, voluptuous red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are important throughout the county, most notably in the cooler AVAs of Russian River, Sonoma Coast and Carneros. Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Syrah have also found a firm footing here.
