Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Sourced from a high elevation vineyard in the heart of the Sierra Foothills where the growing seasons are long, wines from this region develop full flavors and intense color. The volcanic soils produce a Cabernet Franc that is very true to varietal. This wine is well-balanced with moderate tannins, showing a ripe black-fruit aroma and rich black-cherry flavors.

The fruit for this single-vineyard Cab Franc was grown on volcanic soil at a high elevation. Slate and heather coat black fruit on the nose, paving the way for a dynamic palate with dry, grainy tannins. Notes of mocha and coffee wash over grilled plums as violets bloom, surrounding bold structure, elegant texture, and savory aromatics.

Their focus: seeking out the best vineyards in the Sierra Foothills to craft delicious wines with balance, character, complexity and varietal correctness. Andis' winemaking team, Mark Fowler and consulting winemakers, Philippe Melka & Maayan Koschitzky, bring a fresh, modern approach to Sierra Foothills AVA, using both traditional and innovative winemaking approaches, which have garnered 90+ point scores in Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast, glowing reviews in print and online media, and placements in some of the finest restaurants nationwide.

The winery building is a state-of-the-art winemaking facility built with a "green" design. The spacious tasting room offers panoramic vineyard views of the surrounding Amador wine country, expansive picnic area and a bocce ball court.

Cabernet Franc, a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon, is the subtler and more delicate of the Cabernets. Today Cabernet Franc produces outstanding single varietal wines across the wine-producing world. Somm Secret—One of California's best-kept secrets is the Happy Canyon appellation of Santa Barbara. Here Cabernet Franc shines as a single varietal wine or in blends, expressing sumptuous fruit, savory aromas and polished tannins.

Originally a source of oenological sustenance for gold-seeking miners of the mid-1800s, the Sierra Foothills was the first region in California to produce wines from European grape varieties. Located between Sacramento and the Nevada border, this area’s immigrant settlers chose to forgo growing the then-ubiquitous Mission grape and instead brought with them superior vines from the Old World to plant alongside mining camps.

Zinfandel has been the most important variety of this region since its inception, taking on a spicy character with brambly fruit and firm structure. Amador and El Dorado counties, benefiting from the presence of volcanic and granite soils, are home to the best examples. Bold, robust Rhône Blends and Barbera are also important regional specialties.
