Winemaker Notes

The 2016 Zinfandel jumps out of the glass with bold aromas of cherry jam, wild blackberry, violets, kirsch, and toasty oak. A rich, viscous texture is packed with dense flavors of black cherry, boysenberry, cola, and spicy vanilla. Lively notes of black pepper add focus to a smooth, jammy finish.

The 2016 Zinfandel’s deep, supple flavors are an excellent match for fine comfort foods, including wood-fired pizzas, classic lasagna, Santa Maria-style tri-tip, and smoked gouda burgers.

This stellar red shows off an array of exciting flavors—we first tried it at Paso Robles Somm Camp and it became one of the most popular wines of the event. Grown on soils that range from sandstone to petrified oyster shells and white sand, this wine exhibits a rich, grainy tannin sensation that turns creamy on the mid-palate. Aromas and flavors of lavender and cocoa nibs charm as cherry and plum generously wash across the mouth before a finish of cola and toasted oak woven into a bouquet of blue flowers.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2016 Zinfandel is a rich, full-bodied but succulent wine, laden with aromas and flavors of brambly fruit, sweet spices and dark chocolate. Enjoy this nicely balanced, generous red over the next 2-3 years.

COMMENTARY: Soft, ripe, and powerful are words that work well in describing many Zinfandels that are the current marketplace. The 2016 Ancient Peaks Zinfandel can certainly be described in this way. TASTING NOTES: This wine is ripe, round, and lush on the palate. Pair this wine with grilled pork ribs marinated in a sweet/sour piquant sauce. (Tasted: July 5, 2018, San Francisco, CA)

Video of winery

We are a family-owned winery specializing in estate-grown wines from Margarita Vineyard, the southernmost vineyard in the Paso Robles appellation on California’s Central Coast.

Just look at a map of Paso Robles wineries and at the very southern tip you will find our Vineyard. Here, amid the rugged Santa Lucia mountain range just 14 miles from the Pacific Ocean, Margarita Vineyard stands alone as the only vineyard in its vicinity, and thus the only vineyard to benefit from the extraordinary growing conditions of the area. Margarita Vineyard resides in the historic Santa Margarita Ranch, which was first planted to vines by Franciscan missionaries in 1774.

Ancient Peaks and Margarita Vineyard are owned by three longtime local winegrowing families—the Filipponis, Rossis and Wittstroms—who are actively involved in the daily operations of the vineyard and winery. Ancient Peaks wines are crafted under the guidance of Mike Sinor, a local winemaking veteran and one of the highest-rated winemakers on the Central Coast.

Ancient Peaks implements numerous sustainable viticultural practices to ensure natural quality in their wines while protecting the rich, native environment surrounding the Margarita Vineyard. Their practices have earned SIP (Sustainability in Practice) Certification for Margarita Vineyard, the leading standard for viticultural sustainability.

Zinfandel

Unapologetically bold, spice-driven and jammy, Zinfandel is often thought of as California’s flagship grape. And it fact it owns this title by having the ability to adapt to the states’ many microclimates and landscapes, producing unique expressions of the grape throughout. Zinfandel thrives in California’s Central Coast, as well throughout Sonoma County, parts of Napa Valley, the Sierra Foothills, Lodi and Paso Robles.

Zinfandel was born in Croatia and later made its way to southern Italy where it became known as Primitivo. The astute imperial nursery of Vienna collected specimens of the vine and acted as the source of its journey to New England, carried by George Gibbs circa 1829. Eventually, making its way to California around the Gold Rush of 1849, Zinfandel found its new home, parading the true American spirit.

In the Glass

Zinfandel commonly expresses powerful notes of dark plum, blackberry, sweet spice, dark chocolate and licorice. Very ripe examples may express a hint of dried fruit like raisin, fig or prune. But Zinfandel grown in cooler, coastal zones often expresses red fruit, black pepper and fresh herbal characteristics of juniper and menthol.

Perfect Pairings

Zinfandel is a powerfully flavored wine, mingling happily with bold food like brisket, lamb shanks, pork ribs or anything barbecued. More delicate Zins work with pork, lamb curry and even Ceasar Salad or Salad Nicoise.

Sommelier Secret

Thanks to its popularity both for home winemaking and as communion wine, many Zinfandel vines were able to survive prohibition, leading to the abundance of "old vine" Zinfandels. These low-yielding, ancient vines tend to produce wine that is deeply concentrated, delicately perfumed and decidedly complex.
