Winemaker Notes

The Mad Hatter from 2013 is deep, dense, and aromatically flamboyant. It is packed with flavor—fresh blueberry and blackberry, cinnamon, nutmeg, and burnt caramel. The wine’s bright perfume continues to waft up from the glass as it opens. One can pick up the characteristics of each of the four varieties: the powerful fruit of the Cabernet Sauvignon, the licorice spice and savory quality of the Cabernet Franc, the Merlot’s juicy blue fruits, and the brooding, dark nature of the Petit Verdot. It all comes together to create something unique and special in this exciting vintage.

Blend : 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot

The 2013 Proprietary Red Mad Hatter, 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot, is a big-time winner. It has a gorgeously deep ruby/purple color, a sweet kiss of licorice, blackcurrants, black cherries, camphor and incense. The wine is fragrant, with supple tannins, an opulent lushness and a total hedonistic and intellectual turn-on. Drink it over the next 10-12 years

Undoubtedly proving its merit over and over, Napa Valley is a now a leading force in the world of prestigious red wine regions. Though Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa Valley, other red varieties certainly thrive here. Important but often overlooked include Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties well-regarded on their own as well as for their blending capacities. Very old vine Zinfandel represents an important historical stronghold for the region and Pinot noir is produced in the cooler southern parts, close to the San Pablo Bay.

Perfectly situated running north to south, the valley acts as a corridor, pulling cool, moist air up from the San Pablo Bay in the evenings during the hot days of the growing season, which leads to even and slow grape ripening. Furthermore the valley claims over 100 soil variations including layers of volcanic, gravel, sand and silt—a combination excellent for world-class red wine production.
