Winemaker Notes

#57 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2015

Altamura Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 100% Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon fruit from our hillside and valley floor estate vineyards in Wooden Valley, located in the southeastern hillsides of the Napa Valley. Altamura's estate vineyards bring these characteristics together in a hallmark style of rich, multi-layered Cabernet Sauvignon.

Wine Spectator
Amazingly pure, rich and complex, with tiers of dark berry, blackberry, wild berry, blueberry and boysenberry layered on top of black licorice and dusty, gravelly earth details, all well-centered. The finish sails on, with a mocha brownie aftertaste. Drink now through 2028.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Lastly, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged a long time (36 months) in new French oak. This wine is brilliant. Dense blackcurrant fruit intermixed with a touch of barrique as well as licorice, forest floor, and underbrush are present in this cedary, full-bodied, opulent, dramatic and exuberant Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink it over the next 20 years.

Altamura Winery Image
Established in 1985 by Frank and Karen Altamura, Altamura Vineyards and Winery is the sole winery situated in the historical farming region of Wooden Valley, located within the eastern foothills of famed Napa Valley. Altamura is the first to capture the unique characteristics of Wooden Valley in a bottling. Napa native Frank and Karen have a decidedly hands-on approach to every step of the growing and winemaking process. Thus, a natural production limit is established and the wines reflect the Altamuras' deep commitment to reflecting the terroir of their Wooden Valley Ranch.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wines. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
