Winemaker Notes

The 2013 Alta Napa Valley Winery Cabernet Sauvignon has a floral nose with hints of, liquorice, fresh plums, cassis, cherries, and dark fruit with a hint of burnt caramel and roasted coffee. In the mouth, compote of blueberry and currants comes forward in front of the chewy and velvet like tannins. The tannins are just the right size to create a lattice for the fruit so that it lingers on the palate. The scent of violets comes up over time, and the soft tannins are integrated into a delicious mouth feel. This wine has good potential to age well, but it’s showing well as a young wine.

Professional Ratings

  • 92
From the wilds of Atlas Peak, this lovely wine is dense and concentrated in mountain fruit and lengthy tannin—the oak and weight well-integrated and complex. Pie crust, vanilla and clove provide a sultry luxury and invitation.
  • 91
Aromas of blueberries, dark chocolate and walnuts follow through to a full body, round and silky tannins and a fresh and clean finish.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.
