Winemaker Notes

Sonoma County is incredible Cabernet country, so using it as an anchor in a blend is exciting. Blue Dog Cabernet is the base for this wine at 50% and its location in Dry Creek Valley makes for fully ripe, rounded texture. Famighetti Vineyards’ Syrah, from up above the valley floor, lends aromatic complexity and rich mouthfeel while the addition of Merlot, from further south in Carneros, helps reinforce a red-fruit balance of juicy acidity. The final element they needed to fill in some deeper notes of flavor and color was an inky drop of Petite Sirah from Rockpile vineyard in far northern Sonoma County!

A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Syrah, 22% Merlot and 5% Petite Sirah, the 2016 Apex Sonoma County Red Wine sports a deep garnet-purple color and a provocative nose of baked blackcurrants, Black Forest cake, tar and chargrill with hints of bay leaves, truffles and tapenade. Full-bodied, rich and decadently fruited in the mouth, it packs in the black fruit and savory layers with a firm yet plush texture and great length. Rating: 92+

COMMENTARY: The 2016 Adobe Road Apex Red Wine surrounds the palate with an explosion of flavors and textures. TASTING NOTES: This wine aims for the diner who loves wines. Its keenly-built aromas and flavors stay persistent and beautiful on the palate. Pair it with a slowly-braised lamb stew. (Tasted: August 9, 2019, San Francisco, CA)

Adobe Road , California

Adobe Road is a boutique winery producing artisan wines from premium vineyards in both Sonoma and Napa. They maintain collaborative relationships with their growers and carefully select vineyard sites based on their suitability for particular varietals. Their wines are handcrafted in small lots with minimal intervention, including fermentation with native yeasts. At Adobe Road, they believe that these methods, combined with the distinctive nature of our vineyards, lead to expressive wines of the absolute highest quality.

Home to a diverse array of smaller AVAs with varied microclimates and soil types, Sonoma County has something for every wine lover. Physically twice as large as Napa Valley, the region only produces about half the amount of wine but boasts both tremendous quality and variety. With its laid-back atmosphere and down-to-earth attitude, the wineries of Sonoma are appreciated by wine tourists for their friendliness and approachability. The entire county intends to become a 100% sustainable winegrowing region by 2019.

Grape varieties are carefully selected to reflect the best attributes of their sites—Dry Creek Valley’s consistent sunshine is ideal for Zinfandel, while the warm Alexander Valley is responsible for rich, voluptuous Cabernet Sauvignon. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are important throughout the county, most notably in the cooler AVAs of Russian River, Sonoma Coast and Carneros. Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Syrah have also found a firm footing here.

With hundreds of red grape varieties to choose from, winemakers have the freedom to create a virtually endless assortment of blended wines. In many European regions, strict laws are in place determining the set of varieties that may be used, but in the New World, experimentation is permitted and encouraged. Blending can be utilized to enhance balance or create complexity, lending different layers of flavors and aromas. For example, a variety that creates a fruity and full-bodied wine would do well combined with one that is naturally high in acidity and tannins. Sometimes small amounts of a particular variety are added to boost color or aromatics. Blending can take place before or after fermentation, with the latter, more popular option giving more control to the winemaker over the final qualities of the wine.
