Connoisseurs' Guide
Nicely defined with the distinct tropical fruit and flowers of Viognier plainly evident right from the first, this sizeable, deeply drawn working is at once as lively as it is so very rich. It is full and slightly fleshy with a neatly fit compliment of freshening acidity and a very long finish that exhibits great fruity life. It does a remarkable job at hiding its claimed 15.8% alcohol, and, as well-filled and delicious as it is now, it is balanced to last and does not demand hasty drinking.
Full-figured and charmingly floral, Viognier is one of the most important white grapes of the northern Rhône where it is used both to produce single varietal wines and as an important blending grape. Look for great New World examples from California, Oregon, Washington and cooler parts of Australia. Somm Secret—Viognier plays a surprisingly important role in the red wines of Côte Rôtie in the northern Rhône. About 5% Viognier is typically co-fermented with the Syrah in order to stabilize the color, and as an added benefit, add a subtle perfume.
