Winemaker Notes

Vivid green herb and pepper nose with lots of intensity; concentrated, ripe, full and delicately aromatic on the palate with a subtle herby lift; long with a hint of spice on the finish.

Extremely versatile, Veltliner goes especially well with stir-fry dishes, light meat dishes flavored with coriander and cumin, and wonderful with meatier white fish like bass and cod, and all shellfish.

James Suckling
Aromas of melon, tangerine skin, and some hot stones. The palate is sharp but balanced by beautiful delineated flavors reminiscent of grapefruit and cantaloupe. Persistent. Drink now.

The Augustinian Canons Regular monastery of Neustift is located in the northern-most winegrowing region on the southern side of the Alps. The mineral-rich soils, the elevation (1,970 ft – 2,950 ft) and the cool climate are all factors which explain the intense aromas and flavours as well as fruity, mouth-watering acidity found in our wines produced from the typical white Eisack Valley grape varieties. The long drawn-out ripening period extending well into the autumn is crucial. The most widely-grown vines in our vineyards around Vahrn just north of Brixen are Sylvaner, Kerner, Gewürztraminer and Veltliner.

The monastery also owns vineyards in the warm central region of South Tyrol which supply the red grapes. They include the full-bodied, savoury Lagrein from the Mariaheim vineyard in Bolzano/Bozen and red wines from the Marklhof estate in the cool rolling hills of Girlan to the south of Bolzano where the grapes are harvested, crushed and the wines matured. The wines include Vernatsch, Pinot Noir and the lusciously sweet Rosenmuskateller ('Rose Muscat', the name deriving from the variety's typical scent of roses).

With over 850 years of experience coupled with state-of-the-art winemaking technology, top-class expertise and the enormous enthusiasm the wines generate among our employees, we succeed in producing wines bursting with flavour and varietal character year after year, to the joy of wine-lovers worldwide.

Alto Adige

View all wine

Taking full advantage of direct sunlight exposure on its steep slopes, many of Alto Adige’s best vineyards are planted at extreme altitude. It is sheltered by the Alps from cold northerly winds and certain locations experience warm and bright sunshine allowing for even ripening of grapes. Dominant red varieties include the bold, herbaceous Lagrein and delicate, fruity Schiava, as well as some impressive, spicy Pinot Noir. The primary white grapes are Pinot Grigio, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc, as well as smaller plantings of Sauvignon Blanc, Muller Thurgau, and others. These whites are bright and crisp in style typically.

Gruner Veltliner

View all wine

Difficult to pronounce yet delightfully easy to drink, Grüner Veltliner is indigenous to Austria, where it has long maintained its status as the nation’s most important white grape. It became trendy among America’s wine elite in the mid-twenty first century, and has since proven itself to be more than just a fad, becoming a mainstay on the shelves of wine shops and the pages of restaurant wine lists for those who enjoy a crisp and refreshing yet serious white wine. Grüner Veltliner performs well in cool climates, and is gaining ground in chillier pockets of California and New York’s Finger Lakes.

In the Glass

Crisp and refreshing with plenty of lively acidity, Grüner Veltliner is marked by telltale notes of white pepper and a slight vegetal quality reminiscent of green beans, as well as a streak of minerality. When less ripe, it leans toward the lemon/lime end of the fruit spectrum, while additional hangtime at harvest can lend notes of pink grapefruit and even stone fruit. A hint of spritz on the palate is not unusual.

Perfect Pairings

Grüner Veltliner is a wonderfully versatile wine—it can pair with just about any lighter fare, from seafood to poultry to complex salads. It even works with spicy foods, and can be a classic pairing with Asian dishes.

Sommelier Secret

When it comes to foods that are notoriously difficult to pair, Grüner Veltliner has been known to step in and save the day. The sulfur compounds naturally present in asparagus can imbue a wine with a highly unpleasant metallic taste, while artichokes’ cynarin compound typically cause the taste of a wine to turn unpalatably sweet. Grüner Veltliner not only manages to avoid these issues, but actually serves to complement these foods with its sharp, pungent, vegetal flavors.
