    Winemaker Notes

A by Acacia 2006 Chardonnay expresses the vibrant fruit character of grapes grown in California's cool, windswept Monterey County. Bright citrus, pineapple, pear and tropical fruit notes perfume the aromas and beautifully balanced flavors. Hints of spice and vanilla oak weave through the fruit, and then linger on the finish. Crisp natural acidity structures the flavors, balanced with rich, silky texture from sur lie aging.

Lightly chill this Chardonnay, then pull the cork and enjoy with your favorite entrees or simply to sip with friends. A by Acacia's winemaker, Tom Westberg, likes to match this wine with smoked salmon tossed with creamy pasta, pâté on a baguette or sautéed scallops.

Since 1979, Acacia Vineyard has been making world-class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines from the Carneros American Viticultural Area (AVA) in Napa Valley. They founded A by Acacia to expand our passion for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to other distinctive California wine regions including select spots in Sonoma County and along California’s Central Coast. They have also begun sourcing classic Rhône varieties—Syrah and Grenache—from the Central Coast and Lodi AVAs for their Rosé. Each of their wines displays expressive fruit, exceptional balance, and the characteristics of their unique growing regions.

California’s most praised white wine, Chardonnay is also the state’s most planted white grape variety. Diverse terrain and microclimates allow for an incredible range of wine styles.

Chardonnay planted in the cooler, coastal zones takes on bright characteristics like lemon zest, key lime, green apple and wet flint. For this style, look to the chilly Sonoma Coast, Carneros, Santa Cruz Mountains, Santa Lucia Highlands and Edna Valley.

The inland zones of California’s coast, such as the Russian River, Sonoma, Napa and Livermore Valleys maintain a more Goldilocks-esque climate where both styles go. Early picking retains acidity and creates a leaner style but leaving the grapes to hang creates an approachable Chardonnay, balancing richness and finesse.

Chardonnay also plays a major part in the sparkling wine production of the Anderson Valley and Carneros.
