Winemaker Notes
Mas de Can Blau is produced from a small selection of Mazuelo (Carignan), Grenache, and Syrah vines that are 35-50 years old. After a careful hand-selection of the grapes, the wine is fermented separately in small stainless steel vats before being transferred to new French oak barrels for 18 months of aging. Aromatic nose of black and blue fruits, licorice, vanilla and smoky oak. Supple and expansive with impressive vivacity and depth, slow-building tannins, spice and floral notes. Complex and nuanced red blend.

here’s an enticing interplay between the savory leather, espresso, moss and smoke notes in this rich, plush red, which offers a core of blackberry coulis, warm fig, anise, vanilla and graphite. Firmed by sculpted tannins, this is long and well-integrated while expanding through the well-spiced finish. Mazuelo, Syrah and Garnacha.

Made from older vineyards, the 2020 Mas De Can Blau blends 35% Carinyena with 35% old-vine Syrah, and 30% old-vine Garnatxa, the wine spending 18 months in newer oak. The wine is ripe and concentrated, with a rich, rounded sweetness of red and black cherry jamminess, soft tannins, and well-integrated oak. It finishes in light spice notes and toast.
With bold fruit flavors and accents of sweet spice, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre form the base of the classic Rhône Red Blend, while Carignan, Cinsault and Counoise often come in to play. Though they originated from France’s southern Rhône Valley, with some creative interpretation, Rhône blends have also become popular in other countries. Somm Secret—Putting their own local spin on the Rhône Red Blend, those from Priorat often include Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In California, it is not uncommon to see Petite Sirah make an appearance.
