Winemaker Notes

Vineyards from three unique locations were used to achieve the perfect balance of fruit, spice and color. Grapes from McLaren Vale added depth and texture with the distinctive terroir flavors of black plum and red cherry. Langhorne Creek and Southern Fleurieu vineyards contributed to the vibrant crimson color and notes of blackberry, dark fruits and spice.

Plump and generous, with a welcome savory note adding depth to the ripe cherry, licorice and rosemary flavors, lingering on a relatively refined finish. Drink now through 2013. 7,000 cases made.

2 up, Australia
2 up is sourced from vineyards located in Southern Fleurieu and McLaren Vale. The vineyards of the Southern Fleurieu contribute color together with a signature blackberry and spice. The McLaren Vale vineyards give depth and texture together with the complex spice, dark plums and cherry always associated with this region. Together the two regions provide depth, complexity and a powerful mid-palate. Two-up is a popular, centuries old, Australian game of chance played in the back of pubs using two pennies and a paddle called a "kip." Bets get placed, coins get tossed, and everyone goes wild till the pennies land… either both heads—a "two-up," tails or odds—a "one-up." If you get a two-up, you double your money. Odds, you simply throw again. If you get two tails, you lose and it's the next thrower's turn.

Though Syrah originated in the Rhône Valley of France, Australia is home to the oldest Syrah (called Shiraz here) vines on the planet. Found in Australia’s Barossa Valley, where phylloxera has never threated viticulture, these ancient vines are between 140 to 175 years old!

Having brought fame and merit to the country’s wine scene since the early 1950s, namely via the debut of Penfolds Grange, today Syrah (Shiraz) claims rank as the most widely planted grape in Australia. In fact, the amount of land dedicated to Shiraz in Australia is now almost equivalent to what it is in France. Australian Shiraz has its own personality with flavors and aromas of intense blackberry, fruitcake, menthol, tobacco leaf and umami. Conveniently one can find great Australian Shiraz at a variety of price points but the very best will be dense, gloriously complex and capable of long aging.
