Winemaker Notes

Pagos del Galir Godello aims to reflect the identity of Éntoma red wine: a wine that showcases the potential of Atlantic red wines from the banks of the Sil and Galir Valley.

The wine has a deep color. The nose shows intense aromas of red and predominantly black fruits accompanied by spicy, fresh and balsamic notes. The palate is balanced and complex, full-bodied and with warm tannins. On the palate, it is fresh, aromatic and concentrated with balsamic notes. The finish is long and driven by vibrant acidity.

A perfect match for rice dishes, game or chocolate.

Professional Ratings

  • 92
Aromas of blackberries, dark cherries, slate, forest wood and baking spices. Medium-bodied with sleek tannins and crisp acidity. Creamy, with a ripe entry, followed by a silky and juicy texture. Balanced and precise. Long finish.

A pretty nose of wild sage and stone notes accent the palate's black raspberry and black cherry fruit flavors in this bright, light- to medium-bodied red. Framed by light tannings, this lingers on the finish with hints of spice and herb.

Primarily found in the Bierzo, Ribeira Sacra and Valdeorras regions of Spain and in the Dão of Portugal (where it is called Jaen), Mencia is an early ripening, low acid grape that can produce wines of great concentration, complexity and ageability. And yet Mencia once suffered from a poor reputation and deemed capable of producing simple and light red wines. Post-phylloxera growers would grow this variety on low, fertile plains, which produced high yields and uncomplicated finished wines. Somm Secret—The recent rediscovery of the ancient, abandoned vines planted on rugged hillsides of deep schist has unveiled the potential of Mencia and added discredit to its old reputation.

Just to the south of Bierzo, the steeply terraced Valdeorras Spanish wine region is a respected source of both red and white wines. Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet) and Mencía are the principal red varieties while Godello and Palomino compose the majority of this region's whites.
