Red White Sparkling Rosé Spirits GiftsLearn about Savagnin — taste profile, popular regions and more …
An ancient variety originating from the sub-Alpine regions of NE France, Savagnin remains genetically valuable in the modern world of wine as a parent to many of the grape varieties we know today. If you’ve heard of it, you know it as responsible for two quirky styles from the Jura: Vin Jaune and Vin de Paille. Vin Jaune is a wine matured in barrel under a film of flor yeast and Vin de Paille is sweet and concentrated. Savagnin also makes a charming sparkling or still wine and is often found in blends with Chardonnay.
Tasting Notes for Savagnin
Savagnin wine can be dry, sweet or sparkling. The variety is pale-fleshed and generally makes a white wine ranging from light to deep gold in color. Citrus, green apple, quince marmalade, fragrant white flowers, almond, baking spice and white pepper are some common characteristics of Savagnin.
Perfect Food Pairings for Savagnin
Comté cheese, fondue, roasted root vegetables, toasted nuts or any cream-based dishes are natural pairings for Savagnin.
Sommelier Secrets for Savagnin
