About Bordeaux, France

The world's largest fine wine region

Bordeaux offers unmatched reputation, quality, craft, and renowned fine wine. Beloved for range of prices and styles, from approachable ready-to-drink wines to age-worthy classics. Across a wide range of price points, discover expertly blended wines that deliver structure, balance, and timeless appeal.

A map highlighting the Left and Right Bank of Bordeaux. Even the name “Bordeaux” reflects its geography, derived from au bord de l’eau, meaning “along the waters”—a nod to the rivers that shape the region and its wines.

6,500 CHATEAUX
500M+ BOTTLES / YEAR
5,500+ WINE PRODUCERS

Bordeaux is massive. It’s the largest AOC in France, with a vineyard area bigger than all of Germany’s and nearly three times the size of New Zealand’s. Across roughly 6,500 châteaux (which, despite the name, are mostly just wine estates rather than literal castles), more than 5,500 producers turn out over 500 million bottles each year.

The Left Bank

Pauillac is the heavyweight of the Médoc, home to three of the five First Growths and known for bold, concentrated, powerful wines. Margaux is its elegant counterpart — an iron fist in a velvet glove, where power meets perfume and finesse. Between the two sits St-Julien, the Goldilocks of the region: the most consistent appellation in the Médoc, with a round, balanced style that bridges Pauillac's muscle and Margaux's grace. St-Estèphe, by contrast, is the sturdy, rugged one — more clay in the soil means more acidity and structure, but also tremendous flavor and often the best value of the four. Rounding out the major appellations is Pessac-Léognan, the crown jewel of the Graves region and the closest to the city of Bordeaux, which counts a First Growth of its own among its estates.

Built to reward patience

While there are plenty of opportunities to drink young, the finest Left Bank wines are engineered for the long haul, often peaking from 15-20+ years after harvest.

Historic Estates

Grand, historic estates often owned by businesses. The "châteaux" were built as a statement.

The Soil

Deep gravel banks along the Gironde — originally marshland until Dutch engineers drained it in the 1600s.

The Right Bank

St-Émilion is one of Bordeaux's most captivating stops — a UNESCO World Heritage Site with Roman origins and a medieval hilltop town so thoroughly devoted to wine that its streets are lined with nearly as many wine shops as homes. Just next door lies Pomerol, a study in contrasts: the tiniest of Bordeaux's major regions, with no official classification system and no real village center to speak of, yet somehow home to Petrus — a 100% Merlot wine that ranks among the most expensive and sought-after bottles on the planet.
