Winemaker Notes

2018 was a glorious vintage in the Rheinhessen. Brunnenhauschen is Wittmann's highest altitude, coolest climate Grand Cru vineyard. This results in an elegant, refined Riesling that exhibits aromas of fresh apricots and peaches infused with tangy minerality. Bone dry. Medium bodied flavors of Mirabelle plum, bergamot and blood orange, along with a nuance of chalkiness from the soil. 100% Certified Biodynamic.

Drink this refined but intense dry Riesling with poached salmon, Eastern scallops or a mildly seasoned veal chop.

The 2018 Brunnenhäuschen Riesling GG is pure and intense on the flinty, refined and elegant nose. On the palate, this is a rich and salty-piquant, fresh and fine Riesling with finesse, fine tannins (like clayey slate plates), juicy and intense stone fruit and a long, intense and powerful finish. Great wine! Tasted at the domaine in March 2020.

The glossy texture of this wine is complemented by notes of dragon fruit and lemon zest, followed by flavors of white raspberry, clementine and sweet spice. Dry, with substance and acidity powering through, creating a fierce impression. Should integrate nicely with time. Best from 2023 through 2035.

Riesling possesses a remarkable ability to reflect the character of wherever it is grown while still maintaining its identity. A regal variety of incredible purity and precision, this versatile grape can be just as enjoyable dry or sweet, young or old, still or sparkling and can age longer than nearly any other white variety. Somm Secret—Given how difficult it is to discern the level of sweetness in a Riesling from the label, here are some clues to find the dry ones. First, look for the world “trocken.” (“Halbtrocken” or “feinherb” mean off-dry.) Also a higher abv usually indicates a drier Riesling.

Extending south from the Rheingau region to become a valley of gently rolling hills, Rheinhessen is Germany’s largest wine region. The best Rieslings of Rheinhessen, often characterized by smoky, peach and citrus aromas, come from vines grown in the red soils of the Rheinterrasse.
