#10 Whisky Advocate Top 20 Whiskies of 2021

Proof: 101

Famed Master Distiller Jimmy Russell’s love of mid-aged bourbons is no secret. To reflect his father’s tastes, Eddie hand-selected barrels aged between 9 and 10-years-old. To reflect his own passion for the complex characteristics that come with older bourbons, Eddie selected a small batch of carefully aged 14-year-old whiskey, and he artfully crafted these two profiles into one.The magic is in the second maturation. Using new oak barrels specially toasted and charred, resting in one of his favorites timber rickhouses, Tyrone G; a first for Master’s Keep. The result is a masterful unity of taste and flavor. "One" is certainly a harmony that’s worth the wait.

There’s a father-son dynamic at work between Wild Turkey’s two master distillers on this release—with the patriarch Jimmy Russell preferring 8 to 10 years of aging and son Eddie favoring the older stuff. The final blend thus combines 8 to 10 year old and 14 year old bourbons, and that blend was then finished in a mix of toasted and new charred oak barrels. Refined maturity becomes apparent on the first sip. It’s creamy and well spiced, with flavors of chocolate-covered marshmallow, caramel, cotton candy, and marvelous touches of aged tobacco leaf. This is a big whiskey that carries its age with grace and balance.

Although Bourbon may be produced anywhere in the United States, it is most commonly associated with Bourbon County, Kentucky, where it has been produced since the late 18th century. Made from a mash bill containing at least 51% corn, the Bourbon Whiskey distillate must be aged in new, charred white oak barrels. Bourbon Whiskeys are bottled at eighty proof (40% abv) or higher and cannot contain any added color or flavor. A versatile spirit that can be sipped neat, with water or on the rocks, it also performs nicely added to cocktails like the Old Fashioned.
