Winemaker Notes

Grapes are picked overnight to preserve freshness in this creamy Garnacha Blanca.

Clear, medium intensity, lemon colored wine. Aromas of citrus fruit and white fruits with soft mineral notes on the nose. Dry, fresh, medium-bodied with white fruit flavor, mineral, and a long finish.

The varietal 2020 Garnacha Blanca was produced with a variety that was almost extinct in the region, a grape they need to pick early to achieve the profile they are looking for, moderate alcohol (12.5% this year) and fluid. It was fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeast and matured in a combination of Flextank (plastic egg), 500-liter oak barrels, 2,000-liter Stockinger oak vat and stainless steel. The grapes come from a 13-year-old vineyard in the village of Fitero on thick gravel and limestone soils. It has an expressive nose, more aromatic than the variety normally is, with a hint of creaminess, but there's a chalky sensation on the palate. There's purity and crystalline quality, very precise and fine. It's pungent, and the oak is neatly integrated into the wine. The whites are getting better and better. Another incredible bargain.

Producing full-bodied white wines, Grenache Blanc can be unctuous and soft or floral and fresh. Some of the finest examples are terroir-driven, age-worthy wines. It is a key ingredient in white Châteauneuf-du-Pape and many white blends across southern France and NE Spain. Somm Secret—Grenache Blanc plays a key role in the vins doux naturels of Rivesaltes and a subsidiary role in those of Banyuls and Maury.

Just north of Spain’s famous Rioja region, Navarra excels in the production of full and fruit-dominant reds and good quality, dry rosés. Garnacha holds most of the land under vine, with Tempranillo coming in second place.
