Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The red Garnacha 2018 Venus de La Figuera comes from a vineyard on limestone-rich soils at 600 meters in altitude in the village of La Figuera. The wine shows superb elegance and balance, and the 15% alcohol does not show. The vineyard is in a plateau, and the grapes ripen a lot despite the altitude. This vintage was still aged in foudre, and the wine has power and is structured. They used some 30% full clusters in the fermentation, and the élevage was extended to two years. The profile of the wine will change from 2019 and especially from 2019 to 2020. This vineyard manages to keep very good acidity, so the alcohol is well disguised.
Grenache thrives in any warm, Mediterranean climate where ample sunlight allows its clusters to achieve full phenolic ripeness. While Grenache's birthplace is Spain (there called Garnacha), today it is more recognized as the key player in the red blends of the Southern Rhône, namely Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes du Rhône and its villages. Somm Secret—The Italian island of Sardinia produces bold, rustic, single varietal Grenache (there called Cannonau). California, Washington and Australia have achieved found success with Grenache, both flying solo and in blends.
