Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The red 2017 Venus de La Figuera was produced with Garnacha from a vineyard on limestone-rich soils at 600 meters in altitude in the village of La Figuera. It has the fragrance of the Garnacha from the village in a warm Mediterranean vintage when the wine achieved 15% alcohol. It fermented with some whole clusters and indigenous yeast and matured in a 2,500-liter oak foudre for 18 months. This is aromatic, expressive and open, ripe and concentrated, but with amazing freshness and doesn't show the heat of the vintage at all. The palate is medium to full-bodied, and the tannins are very fine and elegant. This feels like a red from a cool vintage with the tasty sensation from the limestone soils. Here the soils are very white and shallow.
Grenache thrives in any warm, Mediterranean climate where ample sunlight allows its clusters to achieve full phenolic ripeness. While Grenache's birthplace is Spain (there called Garnacha), today it is more recognized as the key player in the red blends of the Southern Rhône, namely Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes du Rhône and its villages. Somm Secret—The Italian island of Sardinia produces bold, rustic, single varietal Grenache (there called Cannonau). California, Washington and Australia have achieved found success with Grenache, both flying solo and in blends.
